Luxembourg and Japanese Universities exchange about data science

The Luxembourg-Waseda conference on Modelling and Inference for Complex Data took place from January 23-25 at the University of Luxembourg in hybrid mode. Around 100 participants registered online and in person for this event which offered a quite diversified and broad range of methods and tools to deal with complex data.

The conference featured 22 speakers from the University of Luxembourg, Japanese Universities, Aarhus University and the European Space Agency. Sponsored by the “ERA Chair in Mathematical Statistics and Data Science – SanDAL” and research funds of Prof. Masanobu Taniguchi from Waseda University, this was the first conference organised by Prof. Christophe Ley from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Luxembourg. He leads the research team MIDAS (Modelling – Interdisciplinary – Data (Science) – Applied – Statistics) consisting of Dr. Senthil Murugan, Dr. Guendalina Palmirotta, Florian Felice and Damian Mingo.

The conference was a good opportunity to strengthen the bonds between the University of Luxembourg and Japanese universities, in particular as representatives from the Japanese Embassy in Luxembourg and the Nomura Research Institute attended the conference reception dinner. Moreover, as follow-up of the conference, Prof. Yannick Baraud from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Luxembourg and ERA-Chair holder of SanDAL has been visiting Japan in February 2023 upon invitation from Masanobu Taniguchi.

The goal is to have more collaborations between both countries in the future, involving interdisciplinary and intersectoral research.
